Procedures for Passing a Kidney Stone. Uric Acid Testing

Definition

Uric acid tests are tests that are done to measure the levels of uric acid in blood serum or in urine.

Purpose

Key Terms

Fanconi's syndromeA rare disorder caused by vitamin D deficiency or exposure to heavy metals. GoutA metabolic disorder characterized by sudden recurring attacks of arthritis caused by deposits of crystals that build up in the joints due to abnormally high uric acid blood levels. In gout, uric acid may be overproduced, underexcreted, or both. HyperuricemiaExcessively high levels of uric acid in the blood, often producing gout. PurineA white crystalline substance that is one of the building blocks of DNA. Uric acid is produced when purine is broken down in the body. Uric acidA compound resulting from the body's breakdown of purine. It is normally present in human urine only in small amounts. UricosuriaIncreased levels of uric acid in the urine. Wilson's diseaseA rare hereditary disease marked by the buildup of copper in the liver and brain, causing loss of kidney function.

Bio

We have also translated parts of this composition into French and Spanish to facilitate easier understanding of Kidney Stones. In this way, more people will get to understand the composition.

Urine test

Patients should be checked for the following medications before the urine test: diuretics, aspirin, pyrazinamide (Tebrazid), phenylbutazone, probenecid (Benemid), and allopurinol (Lopurin). If the patient needs to continue taking these medications, the laboratory should be notified.

Description

The uric acid blood test is performed on a sample of the patient's blood, withdrawn from a vein into a vacuum tube. The procedure, which is called a venipuncture, takes about five minutes. The urine test requires the patient to collect all urine voided over a 24-hour period, with the exception of the very first specimen. The patient keeps the specimen container on ice or in the refrigerator during the collection period. Urine test

Reference values for 24-hour urinary uric acid vary from laboratory to laboratory but are generally found within the following range: 250-750 mg/24 hours. It was with great relief we ended writing on Kidney Stone. There was just too much information to write, that we were starting to lose hopes on it's completion!

Abnormal results

The critical value for the blood test is a level of uric acid higher than 12 milligrams per deciliter (about 4 ounces). Embarassed

Risks

Risks for the blood test are minimal, but may include slight bleeding from the puncture site, a small bruise or swelling in the area, or fainting or feeling lightheaded. It was with keen interest that we got about to writing on Uric Acid Levels. Hope you read and appreciate it with equal interest.

The Laboratory Should Also be Notified If the Patient Has

Had recent x-ray tests requiring contrast dyes. These chemicals increase uric acid levels in urine and decrease them in blood. Aiming high is our motto when writing about any topic. In this way, we tend to add whatever matter there is about Purine Metabolism, rather than drop any topic.

Normal results

Blood test

Reference values for blood uric acid vary from laboratory to laboratory but are generally found within the following range: Male: 2.1-8.5 mg/dL; female: 2.0-6.6 mg/dL. Values may be slightly higher in the elderly.

Abnormally Low Uric Acid Levels May Indicate that the

Patient is taking allopurinol or probenecid for treatment of gout; may be pregnant; or suffers from Wilson's disease or Fanconi's syndrome. We are satisfied with this end product on Uric Acid Kidneys. It was really worth the hard work and effort in writing so much on Uric Acid Kidneys.

  • Preparation

The uric acid test requires either a blood or urine sample.
  • For the blood sample, the patient should be fasting (nothing to eat or drink) for at least eight hours before the test.
  • The urine test for uric acid requires a 24-hour urine collection.
  • The urine test does not require the patient to fast or cut down on fluids.
  • Some laboratories encourage patients to drink plenty of fluids during the collection period.
  • We have not included any imaginary or false information on Gout Uric Acid here.
  • Everything here is true and up to the mark!

Increased production of uric acid may result from eating foods that are high in purine. Increased uric acid levels due to overproduction may also be caused by gout, by a genetic disorder of purine metabolism, or by metastatic cancer, destruction of red blood cells, leukemia, or cancer chemotherapy. Using our imagination has helped us create a wonderful article on Kidney Stone Formation. Being imaginative is indeed very important when writing about Kidney Stone Formation!

Uric Acid is a Waste Product that Results from the

Breakdown of purine, a nucleic acid. (Nucleic acids are the building blocks of DNA.) Uric acid is made in the liver and excreted by the kidneys. If the liver produces too much uric acid or the kidneys excrete too little, the patient will have too much uric acid in the blood. This condition is called hyperuricemia. Supersaturated uric acid in the urine (uricosuria) can crystallize to form kidney stones in men block the tubes that lead from the kidneys to the bladder (the ureters). Even the beginner will get to learn more about Kidney Stone Formation after reading this article. It is written in easy language so that everyone will be able to understand it.

  • Decreased excretion of uric acid is seen in chronic kidney disease, low thyroid, toxemia of pregnancy, and alcoholism.
  • Patients with gout excrete less than half the uric acid in their blood as other persons.
  • Only 10-15% of the total cases of hyperuricemia, however, are caused by gout.

There are many different potential triggers for gout that you should be aware of if you suffer from the condition. One of the foods that trigger gout we've been asked about recently is sleep apnea. It may seem as though these two conditions are completely unrelated, but in reality, they are connected. The connection was first noticed when sleep apnea patients received treatment for their disorder and they noticed their gout symptoms simultaneously improved.

No matter the final remedy, improvements to a patients sleep apnea problem ensures that blood oxygen levels remain high, minimizing uric acid and monosodium urate precipitation and therefore gout flare ups. Penetration into the world of Gout Attacks proved to be our idea in this article. Read the article and see if we have succeeded in this or not!

The reason for this link is believed to be the reduction in blood oxygen during apnea episodes, causing cell disintegration in the body and the generation of uric acid in the bloodstream. The cause of gout is, after all, the presence of uric acid crystals in the joints. Furthermore, during apnea there is an increase in the carbon dioxide percentage within the blood, making the blood's acidity level higher and increasing the risk of uric acid precipitation as monosodium urate. This can collect in the joints and can even lead to an increased risk of developing kidney stones. We consider that we have only touched the perimeter of information available on Gout. There is still a lot more to be learnt!

Other links between sleep apnea and gout include show up in the fact that not only are primary gout sufferers demographically the same as the primary sleep apnea sufferers (middle-aged, overweight men), but sleep apnea and gout are also both much more common among women who have been through menopause. Also, both gout and sleep apnea are associated with people who have a larger neck circumference. Perhaps you may not have been interested in this passage on Gout. In that case, please don't spread this feedback around!

  • This effect is very similar to what happens within the cells when excess alcohol is consumed.
  • And it should be noted that drinking alcohol can cause sleep apnea to become more pronounced.
  • Therefore, gout sufferers with sleep apnea have two major reasons to avoid drinking alcohol.

Most notably, though, is that gout attacks are the most common while asleep, indicating that sleep has an impact on gout attacks and sleep disturbances and conditions may also influence the causes of gout attacks. Perfection has been achieved in this article on Gout Attacks. There is hardly any matter left from this article that is worth mentioning.Perfection has been achieved in this article on Gout Attacks. The treatments for sleep apnea include preventative actions, such as avoiding sleeping on one's back. When sleeping on the back, the airway can become constricted and is more likely to close, causing the oxygen levels in the blood to be lower than in other sleeping positions. Therefore, changing the way you sleep can help to prevent gout attacks simply by increasing the overall blood oxygen level. Other sleep apnea treatments can include a pressurized CPAP mask or surgery. Very Happy.
